Nero paced around the Charger, looking it up and down, marvelling at the impressive work that Mendy had completed on it. She stood nearby, a mess of grease and ripped overalls, topped with a cheeky smile as she watched with her arms crossed.

It had been several days, as a number of parts had to be custom made to replace those that had either been lost entirely or broken beyond repair. But the end result was amazing. It didn’t look like it had been thrown into the air by a giant mutant wasp any more, that was for sure.

“Here, fire her up.” Mendy threw him the keys.

Nero nodded, stepped into the driver's seat, and turned her on. The V8 roared into life and settled into its familiar throaty rumble, making Nero smile like a spoilt child.

“Impressive,” he said. “I can’t believe it. It’s as good as new.”

“Well, not quite, but it’ll keep you going,” Mendy replied.

“Thank you so much. I don’t really know how I can repay you,” he said and offered her his hand.

Mendy grasped his hand in hers, and locked eyes with him. “Save Nyx. That will be payment enough. She encouraged me to follow my passion and learn how to be a mechanic, out of sight of Rex, between jobs in Privay’s brothel. And without you and her ending Rex’s reign, I might never have taken over the garage. So it’s me who should be thanking you. Fixing this beauty of a machine was a pleasure and doesn’t really pay back what you did for me.”

“I had no idea,” Nero replied.

She shrugged. “As it should be. Good luck,” she said with a smile, and made her way back towards the garage, whistling as she went.

“Nero,” Kat called out as she walked over. “May I have a word?”

“Sure,” he answered turning the engine off and getting out of the car. “What’s up?”

“I need to speak to you.”

“Go ahead, I’m not doing anything.”

“Well, I don’t know how to say this, really,” she said, sounding nervous as her eyes flicked around the camp, looking at anything but at him. He felt sure he knew what this was all about, though. He’d been watching her over the last few days, seeing her train the other women and almost feeling the joy and satisfaction she got from it.

“You want to stay here,” Nero said, his tone even.

Kat blinked. “Um, yes. How did you…?”

“It was obvious. I’ve seen you. All that training you were giving to the women here, they clearly love it, and so do you.”

She nodded, her cheeks burning. “I do.”

“Then stay. You don’t need to come with me. What you need is to find your own direction in life, not follow me around as I trek through the wastes. I can already see the good you’re doing here. So stay.”

“You’re sure?”

“Quite sure. Maybe the Watchtower will become the home of The Blades?”

Kat smirked. “Who knows.”

“I’ll miss you, though,” Nero added.

“I’ll miss you too. It’s been… an adventure, and you need to promise me you’ll bring Nyx here to see me.
